Labour Member of Parliament for Stoke-on-Trent South
Rob has introduced a Bill to Parliament which seeks to tackle climate change by reducing British meat and dairy farms' dependence on animal feed grown in South America.
Speaking shortly before presenting his Bill, Rob said,
"I was shocked to find out just how much a Sunday roast can cost our planet under the factory farming system. I am determined to put this right by working with Friends of the Earth and other MPs across the House to lead the drive for planet-friendly farming that doesn't destroy wildlife, rainforests and our climate. I hope the people of Stoke-on-Trent will join me in fixing the food chain once and for all."
Rob had the chance to present the Bill after being drawn second in the ballot that is held during each Parliamentary session for Private Members Bills. These can be on any topic, but are not allowed to create new taxation or force the Government into spending extra money. Generally speaking, only the top six MPs drawn have a chance to get their bills passed, so there is a real opportunity for this Bill to be successful.
The Bill has the backing of Friends of the Earth, who have been successful with a number of the bills in the past and are hopeful to have the same success on this occasion. The 'second reading' of the Sustainable Livestock Bill will take place on Friday 12th November, and needs the support of 100 MPs to proceed any further.
