Labour Member of Parliament for Stoke-on-Trent South
Rob Flello has today denounced Prince Philip's alleged comments about Stoke-on-Trent as "nonsense" during an interview on BBC Radio Stoke's Drivetime programme.
During an interview with presenter, Tim Wedgwood, Rob said that although the Prince might find such comments amusing, they could potentially be damaging to efforts to make sure Stoke is known for the right reasons and becomes an area where companies want to bring jobs and industry. Nevertheless, Rob said that this provides an opportunity for the people of Stoke to show the true side, rather than the opinions of one individual.
Rob was responding to an incident in Tony Blair's autobiography which the former Prime Minister describes as 'amusing' exchange between Stoke-on-Trent North MP Joan Walley and the Prince. In it, the Prince asked Joan Walley MP which area she represented and after she replied that it was Stoke-on-Trent, the royal replied, "ghastly place, isn't it?"
Rob is now going to write to Prince Philip and offer the opportunity for him to visit Stoke-on-Trent and see for himself what the City has to offer. Rob said, "during a recent visit, Prince Charles said how impressed he was with the City" and will now be writing to the Palace to offer Prince Philip a similar opportunity to take a tour of the area.
