Government's bid to stop migrants boarding trucks in Calais to enter UK "must only be the start", says Rob

GOVERNMENT efforts to stop migrants boarding trucks in Calais to enter Britain illegally “must only be the start”, Rob has insisted.

The MP, Chairman of Parliament's All-Party Freight Transport Group, spoke after Home Secretary Theresa May announced measures designed to tackle a crisis which has seen authorities at the French port thwart more than 8,000 attempts by migrants to enter the UK in just the last three weeks alone.

The measures include establishing a secure waiting area for up to 230 lorries and the deployment of 90 officers to a taskforce attempting to stop traffickers smuggling migrants to Europe from North Africa.

Rob's Commons speech on the Tories' July 2015 Budget: 'This was a shameful Budget that provided no security for the weakest in our society'

THIS was a shambolic, shameful, pitiful Budget, more interested in grabbing headlines, trying to get the Chancellor in the slot for a future place in No. 10 (Downing Street) and trying to lay political traps.

This was not a Budget for the future of Britain. My right hon. Friend the Member for Oldham West and Royton (Mr Meacher) had it down to a T: this is a Budget to provide cover for the Chancellor (George Osborne, Conservative, Tatton) to shrink the size of the state. That is all that this has been about.

'Fox-hunting is cruel and barbaric and the ban on it must be retained'

ROB has vowed to oppose David Cameron’s ‘backdoor bid’ to relax restrictions on fox-hunting.

The Stoke-on-Trent South Labour MP made the pledge as Parliament prepared to debate Government plans to bring the law in England and Wales into line with that in Scotland – a proposal which, if approved, would allow more dogs to be used to flush out foxes to be shot.

Public services 'will be wiped out or cut to a shadow of their former levels' in this week's Budget, warns Rob

PUBLIC services ‘will be wiped out or cut to a shadow of their former levels’ in this week’s Budget, Rob has warned.

He said Chancellor George Osborne’s statement would reward the rich while punishing the poor.

Rob: "Chancellor must deliver a freight-friendly Budget which recognises logistics industry's economic importance"

“THE Chancellor must deliver a freight-friendly Budget which recognises the logistics industry is the rock on which the British economy is built,” says Rob.

The Stoke-on-Trent South MP, who is also Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Freight Transport, wants George Osborne to cut fuel duty, tackle skills shortages and improve infrastructure when he announces his latest tax and spending plans in the House of Commons on Wednesday (July 8).

Attacks on truckers in Calais must be debated by Parliament "before somebody is killed", says Rob

ARMED attacks on truckers in strike-hit Calais must be debated by Parliament “before somebody is killed”, says Rob.

Speaking in the Commons earlier today (July 2), the Stoke-on-Trent South MP said the “Gallic shrug” to the growing number of assaults involving guns, knives and an iron bar was “not good enough”.
